London is famed for its often dreary weather and a number of historic monuments, superb shopping districts and plenty of nightlife to suit every person, but for a punch of color and a more serene and aesthetically pleasing scene, check out one of two garden shows—Kew Gardens Tropical Extravaganza or Chelsea Flower Show.
In February and early March, visitors to London can see more than 250,000 orchids on display in the annual Kew Gardens Tropical Extravaganza. The 2009 Extravaganza was particularly special, because it marked Kew's 250th anniversary, featuring a number of additional events, behind the scenes tours, lectures and dinners.
The orchid collection at Kew is one of the oldest in existence, and rare specimens are flown in from around the globe just for the annual show, which occupies the entire 48,000sf Princess of Wales Conservatory. It's a huge draw for flower lovers all over the world and an event not to be missed if you're in town.
However, there is much more to Kew than orchids as it boasts more than 300 acres of grounds, glasshouses, museums and restaurants. Dine in the elegant Orangery, built in 1961, tour Kew Palace, recently reopened after 10-year restoration, stroll the Japanese Garden or visit the magnificent Rhododendron Dell, in flower from November to May.
If you can't get to Kew in February, try Chelsea in May, during the famous Chelsea Flower Show (May 19-23), widely considered the best garden show in the world. You'll see the latest in landscape and garden design, as well as acres of spring flowers at their very best.
Whichever event you go to, iPass has you covered in London with more than 1,250 iPass locations in London alone, plus Heathrow airport.
Life is hectic, but find time to stop and smell the flowers!
