Guten Tag, Wi-Fi!
-- -

If you're traveling to Munich, say hello to Wi-Fi access.

Munich is the capital of Bavaria, Germany and is number nine on the iPass Wi-Fi Hotspot Index list of top ten cities where people are getting connected. There are more than 200 hotspots throughout the city, from the DB Lounge at the Munich Main Railway Station, to more than 100 hotels and 50 restaurants, not to mention five convention centers.

And while you're clicking and surfing your way to greater productivity, why not spend a few extra days partaking in Munich's sights, sounds and suds?

One of the most beloved landmarks is the Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, a beer hall in the city's center that acts as a fabulous informal meeting spot perfect for anyone wishing to hoist a stein of Munich's well-crafted beer. Or go straight to the source by visiting one of the city's breweries to sample beers whipped up from wheat, malt and hops.

If a few steins is not enough, then plan your trip to coincide with Oktoberfest, a two week extravaganza of beer tents, fairground attractions and millions of visitors. First held in 1810 to honor the marriage of crown prince Ludwig, the festival now celebrates the prince and princess in all of us. Book tickets early for the last two weeks in September—the festival always finishes on the first Sunday in October—and get your palate ready for Bavarian specialties like bread dumplings, sausages, sauerkraut, and freshly-baked pretzels.

Oktoberfest aside, there are numerous ways to see the best of Munich. Art aficionados will have plenty to fill their days as there are ample art galleries and museums which are home to major pieces by artists such as Raphael, Peter Paul Rubens and Albrecht Dürer. Stop at the National theater for some opera or go to the Gasteig to check out the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.

For nightlife, Munich is jumping, particularly at a student-filled borough called Schwabig. Though it traditionally attracted bohemian artists, it now buzzes nightly with locals and tourists visiting the wide range of bars, clubs and restaurants.

While planning your cultural and clubbing adventures, feel free to do a bit of business as well. According to a study conducted by the New Social Market Economy Initiative, Munich has the strongest economy among German cities and the lowest unemployment rate. Major corporations like BMW, Allianz and Siemens AG make their home in the city; other strong industries include software and biotechnology.

Even if you're just zipping through the city, you'll get a sense of its distinction. Not only is the Franz Josef Strauss International Airport a busy hub, but drivers instinctively gravitate toward the Autobahn, a network of freeways that's built for speed.

Whether lingering in the city center, imbibing some beer or just lounging at the airport for a few hours, Munich has much to offer.

And thanks to iPass, you can always say "guten tag" to Wi-Fi.
