True fútbol fans live for tourneys like the World Cup, the Olympics and the European Championships—when the planet's best players cast aside their pro jerseys and play for pride and country. The World Cup Finals alone are the most-watched sports event in the world, with more than 700 million people viewing the 2006 match.
For a preview of some of the strongest teams that will take part in the 2010 South Africa World Cup, look no further than this year's Euro 2008 Championships, which take place in Austria and Switzerland starting on June 7th.
The eight legendary venues are in history-filled cities like Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Zurich and Geneva. If you're lucky enough to be going to the championships or can schedule some business in the area during the month of June, you're in luck.
iPass reports that Switzerland ranks as number four on its Mobile Broadband Index list of top ten countries where people are getting connected.
What this means for you: You'll find iPass hotspots in each of the tournament cities—nearly 2,000 in Switzerland and close to 200 in Austria—as well as at the airports in Salzburg, Zurich, Geneva and Bern, among others. Just check the schedule and plan your itinerary so you're sure to have plenty of Wi-Fi connectivity from airport to hotel and restaurants to cafés, all in time for the big event.
The first ten days of the championships are the hotly-contested group of round-robin matches where each country tries to secure a berth in the quarter-finals. The top two teams in each of the four groups advance; from then on, it's knock-out time—with no second chances.
Some of the top favorites are Germany, Spain and Italy, with Portugal and France not far behind. Greece, the surprise winner in the 2004 Championships, is unlikely to repeat. But as they say in the game of sports, "It's anyone's game."
If you're combining fútbol viewing with a vacation, try traveling from city to city as the tournament progresses. Thanks to the round-robin format, you can take your pick of cities in which to begin your tour.
One possible itinerary:
Start with Geneva, home to a magnificent lake, numerous art galleries and Palais de Nations, the European UN headquarters. Go from there to Zurich, where the must-do list includes a cruise on the lake and a pilgrimage to the Chagall windows in the Fraumünster church.
In the second week, move over to Austria and take in Alpine-paradise Innsbruck, which is equally beautiful in summer (there is even summer skiing in the nearby glaciers!) and music-capital Salzburg, with its medieval Old Town and magnificent cathedral.
But all roads lead to Vienna—site of the Euro Finals, capital of Austria and according to The Economist, the city with the best quality of life in the world.
Don't miss the Imperial Jewels in the Hofburg, the Lippizaner stallions at the famed Spanish Riding School or the giant ferris wheel in the Prater amusement park. It's just a stone's throw away from the Ernst Happel Stadium where the Euro 2008 finals will be played. Classical music fans can choose from a wealth of opera and orchestra offerings, not to mention that the Vienna Boy's Choir is something worth taking a listen to.
Without a doubt, this year's tournament will have fans cheering for more than just their favorite players and teams—let the games begin!
