Pretty as a Picture

By David Wallace

Digital picture frames are a hot gift idea and range in size from key-chain screen to vibrant 14-inch LCDs. These simple-looking plastic rectangles deliver a plethora of features and options, so shop with a sharp technical eye (or a friend).

First check to see what memory cards you use-SD, mini SD, XD, CF or others-and which ones the frames support. You may want to copy selected photos onto a compatible format or devote a specific memory card to keep in the frame. Certain models copy images onto internal memory, while more sophisticated models offer a monthly subscription service that lets you see other people's photos via a Web connection.

Most frames offer basic 800 x 600 pixel resolution but can be powered via different sources such as a wall-powered AC cord, batteries or a computer's USB port. Higher-priced models may include speakers, video capability or a remote control for flipping through pictures.

Kodak and Ceiva models have software built-in and on-screen menus that allow you to customize your photo display by changing the refresh speed, arranging the order photos appear and rotating, cropping or deleting images.

Prices can be as high as $300 and can be found everywhere from giant electronics retailers like Best Buy and Radio Shack to the corner pharmacy or office supply store. Smaller frames, for as little as $50, offer a 1-inch screen and storage space for a few dozen images.

Expect to see some intriguing uses for these devices: One enterprising coffee shop sells ads in a small 8-inch frame to nearby businesses, including a real estate agent who posts pictures of local houses for sale.

One to give and one to keep, you don't want to be left out of this digital migration.
