Bustling through Brussels Charleroi
-- -

By Becky Waring

Brussels South Charleroi is among the nearly 500 iPass airport hotspots in its worldwide footprint, but this one is a key link in the chain. Thanks to the many European Union and NATO organizations located in Brussels, Charleroi is an important regional hub; plus, a new terminal opened in 2008 that has a capacity of 5 million passengers per year.

The biggest airline at Charleroi is Ryanair, which uses Brussels as its continental hub for flights all over Europe, Ireland and the UK. Wizz Air also connects Brussels to Eastern European capitals, Jet4you flies direct to Morocco and Jetairfly goes to the holiday islands of the Grand Canaries and Tenerife.

Of course, you'll also find iPass at the main Brussels International Airport, where the major airlines fly, from Air France to United.

In and around Brussels there are more than 150 iPass hotspots, including 80 hotels. Two standouts are the 5-star Radisson SAS Royal Hotel, housed in an iconic art deco building by Michel Jaspers, and the legendary Hotel Metropole, built in 1895 in the French Renaissance style. Both are located in the very heart of the city, steps from the central railway station and the "Grote Markt" or Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dominated by the 15th century Town Hall.

The other can't-miss attraction in Brussels is the Atomium, a huge monument originally built for the 1958 World's Fair in the shape of an iron crystal. Giant tubes connect 12 edges of the cube to spheres at each corner. The top sphere is a restaurant that provides a sweeping view of the city. Other spheres (each about 335 ft. in diameter) hold exhibitions. The central vertical tube and vertices house the elevator. It was completely renovated in 2006 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008.

At the base of the Atomium, in the Bruparck, there's another popular attraction: "Mini-Europe". It has scale reproductions of all the famous monuments in the EU, such as Big Ben, the canals of Venice, Mount Vesuvius and the Berlin Wall, more than 300 models in all.

Finally, before you leave Brussels, be sure to taste some of Belgium's famous chocolates. Chocolate is so important to the Belgians, that there are no less than 2,000 chocolate shops in the country and multiple chocolate museums. Every major chocolatier also has a factory tour where you can usually score some free samples. Bring some home for the lucky people on your list!

Being mobile never tasted so good!
