Café Face Off: Insomnia vs O'Briens
-- -

By Becky Waring

There seems to be no shortage of good coffee in Ireland, thanks to two rapidly-growing chains: Insomnia Coffee and O'Briens Irish Sandwich Bars.

Between the two of them, travelers to the country can keep fed and caffeine-fueled throughout the day. But the real attraction is that both are part of the iPass network; so when the everyday office scene has you fresh out of creative ideas, you can keep connected using hi-speed Internet and enjoy a latte while you're at it too!

Founded just 10 years ago, Insomnia now has 22 shops in and around Dublin, plus locations in Cork and Louth. It serves Chai teas, icey frappes, sandwiches and pastries, in addition to the usual cappuccinos and espressos. The 25-item sandwich menu is particularly impressive, with everything from hummus and roasted peppers on ciabatta to "crayfish and rocket". Danishes, scones, muffins and bagels are also available at any time of day.

In Dublin, Insomnias can be found in major shopping, business and tourist locations like Baggot Street and St. Stephen's Green, the IFSC building and the Malahide Shopping Center (near Malahide Castle).

In contrast, O'Briens is the granddaddy of Irish coffee and sandwich shops, boasting more than100 outlets in Ireland alone and more than 300 spread across the globe in Britain, Australia, India, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and elsewhere.

A huge variety of hot and cold sandwiches is the centerpiece of O'Briens' menu, along with soups, salads, fresh chips (french fries), snacks and pastries. Wi-Fi is still being rolled out to the chain's various locations, but you can find the latest list of O'Briens locations with iPass using our hotspot finder No matter where you are in Ireland, there's likely an O'Briens nearby.

But of course you aren't limited to just Insomnia and O'Briens to get quick connections when traveling to Ireland.

iPass also offers Wi-Fi at all major airports and at nearly 100 hotels, making close to 250 locations on the Emerald Isle available to you. Check out the famous 5-star Shelbourne, Merrion or Fitzwilliam Hotels in Dublin, to name a few.
