Bling Tones
-- -

If faceplates, screensavers and ring tones aren't enough to personalize your cell phone of choice, try adding blinking, whirling, bejeweled charms. Some novelties offer useful functions such as having a flashing light to alert you of signal strength or an incoming call, while others just add a bit of flair to your mobile device.

Moshi Monsters for instance, are tiny characters in clear plastic capsules that attach to your handset's strap loop. They can also be tied to outerwear, bags or set on a desktop when your phone's out of sight. Spinning or flashing notifies you of signal changes, text messages and calls.

Urban Outfitters and other hip stores carry the little trinkets or you can try online shops like Firebox to find the one that suits you best.

There are collector blogs, web pages and other online resources on the subject of these fun gadgets. And if you cared for the Digipet or egg-shaped Tamagotchi from a decade ago, you know there are no limits to the possibilities of these fun little accessories.

Japanese manga cartoon character charms are available at prices up to $15. "The internal battery lasts only about a week, and then all you have is a little dangling toy," says Billy Kwan, owner of Starzzone Communications, a Boston cell phone store. Already popular with teenagers in the United Kingdom and Asia, many of these critters are GSM-only and may not work with 3G U.S. networks.

Other phone charm options include the 1950s vintage rabbit's foot, tiny rhinestones or jewels and a logo of your favorite sports team. To stand out from the crowd, try a mini cactus—encased in plastic for your safety.

Soft plastic, rubber or fabrics in a variety of styles and colors also serve the dual purpose of adding personalization and functionality to your phone. These cell phone coverings are the best choices to avoid scratching or damaging devices and inadvertently pressing keys.

But when the weight of all those toys and accessories exceeds that of the phone or PDA, it's time to scrap the cell-phone decorating hobby for another fetish.
