iPass SmartConnect: A Mobile Technical Decision Maker’s Guide

We are in the midst of unprecedented growth in mobile data traffic. And that growth shows no signs of abating. According to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index, mobile traffic reached a peak of 7.2 exabytes per month at the end of 2016. That number represents 63 percent growth over the course of the year. Mobile subscribers have shown an insatiable appetite for data. They demand that they receive faster network speeds in the form of low-cost unlimited data plans.

What does this mean for connectivity suppliers? Well, for mobile operators, the finite, comparatively more expensive cellular capacity that’s being added to meet this demand is being consumed almost immediately. At the end of the day, those mobile economics aren’t great for mobile operators.

But, adding global Wi-Fi connectivity into a mobile offering has long been an attractive, low-cost way to extend coverage and enhance user experience and customer satisfaction. However, doing so at scale has presented significant integration challenges and require substantial investment.

To get around this, iPass, a software and technology company that provides mobile connectivity to the world’s biggest Wi-Fi network, has developed a data-driven platform called iPass SmartConnect that not only overcomes major integration challenges but also delivers significant additional intelligence.

iPass SmartConnect can be integrated into a mobile network relatively easily thanks to a simple yet powerful software development kit (SDK).

This document outlines the main technical characteristics of the platform and illustrates some of the main use cases that could be of benefit
to mobile operators.
